Waterfront Recreation will open for the season on Thursday, May 21!

We are excited to have waterfront programming to enhance your educational and recreational experience at UMass Boston. Our mission to provide a safe environment for learning, recreation, and relief from the stresses of being a student, faculty, or staff member. We are also happy to offer these activities to the local community!! If you are a part of the UMB community, discounted rates are available. The Greater Boston community can also enjoy these activities by purchasing a season pass or take advantage of our hourly rates!

Located on the beautiful Columbia Point next to UMass Boston at the Fox Point Dock.  To access the waterfront dock, head through the Fox Point Pavilion to the Harbor Walk and then walk across the bridge down to the dock area.  Look for our Waterfront Recreation flags or our team on the dock!

Waterfront Activities

  • Kayaking: Explore the waters with our fleet of 12 – 10.5ft, 1 person Sea kayaks and 8 -  14 ft, 2 person Sea Kayaks. Perfect for solo adventures or paddling with a friend!

  • Stand-Up Paddle boarding (SUP): Test your balance and soak up the sun on our 6 stand-up paddleboards. A great way to enjoy the scenery and get a full-body workout.

  • Rowboats: Enjoy a leisurely day on the water with our 4 - 2 person rowboats. Ideal for a relaxing outing or a fun rowing experience.

  • Sailing: Unfortunately we are not able to offer recreational sailing at this time as part of the program.

  • Intro to Sailing: Unfortunately at this time all sailing activities have been suspended including sailing lessons.

Hours of Operation

The Waterfront Recreation program will reopen on Thursday May 21 on a Thursday-Sunday operating schedule for the season.  Hours of operation each day are 12pm-7pm.

Weather Policies

Weather Policies:

  1. All participants must follow the instructions of waterfront staff in regards to the weather coming back to shore.  All vessels must be returned to the dock when instructed to avoid inclement weather and damaging equipment.
  2. Participants will be notified as soon as possible via email if weather forces the waterfront to close during a specific reservation time or for the totality of the day.  Depending on the weather forecast, the waterfront may close for brief periods during operation.  The final call will be made by the Program Manager and all participants who reserved a vessel for use will be notified via email.
  3. Any reservations affected by weather will be cancelled and not rebooked.  Participants will have to rebook a reservation at another time the waterfront is open.
  4. If weather affects the ability of a pre-purchased guest pass user to utilize waterfront activities, a credit will be applied to the guest or "rain check" at the discretion of the Program Manager.
  5. In the event of a storm involving lightning, torrential rains, or high winds, participants should leave the dock area to one of the main campus buildings across the street to take shelter.
  6. Safety will always be the top priority when assessing weather and cancelling waterfront activities.  Participants do not get to choose what weather is too inclement for their own abilities.

Here are the most frequently asked questions.

  1. Do you provide life jackets free of charge?

    • Yes, we do. Life jackets are provided at no additional cost and must be worn at all times while on the water.
  2. What are the age requirements for using the waterfront equipment?

    • Participants must be at least 16 years old to rent equipment. Minors (under 16) must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who will sign a waiver and supervise them.
  3. Are reservations required for using the equipment?

    • Reservations are strongly encouraged but not required.  Participants who walk up may be able to use equipment if it's not reserved, but reservations take precedence over walk up participants if equipment is limited.
  4. Are outside guests allowed to join Recreation Members on the water?
    • Yes, non-UMB Recreation members may also participate in waterfront recreation activities by purchasing a day pass fee.  This can be done when checking in at the waterfront for a reservation or ahead of time through the .
  5. Is experienced required to use the waterfront equipment?
    • There is no prior experience required to use kayaks, stand up paddleboards, or a rowboats but there may be a small learning curve if it's your first time.  Our staff is there to help you with any questions and provide instructions! 
    • There is a possibility you could get wet on the water!  We strongly encourage participants to store valuable items at the dock in our lockers (locks are available for checkout) to not lose anything on the water.
  6. What should I bring with me for a day on the water?

    • We recommend bringing sunscreen, a hat, water, a towel, and appropriate clothing for water activities. You should also bring your valid Beacon ID for equipment rental and check in.
  7. Is there a changing area or locker room available?

    • No, we do not have changing areas, but we do have a few lockers to store belongings.
  8. What are the operating hours of the waterfront program?

    • See Hours of operation section.
  9. Are there any safety guidelines I need to follow?

    • Yes, safety is our top priority. All participants must wear life jackets, follow the instructions of our staff, and adhere to posted safety guidelines.

General Waterfront Rules and Regulations

For further questions regarding Waterfront Recreation and its offerings, please contact Matt Lee, Manager of Intramural Programs and Informal Recreation, at matthew.lee@umb.edu.

  1. All participants that utilize a vessel must sign a waiver release form before being allowed to participate in waterfront activities.  This is done electronically if you are a UMB Recreation member or as a guest.
  2. Participants must operate all program vessels in a safe and prudent manner.  Damage done to the equipment due to inappropriate use may result in fines or suspension of Waterfront Recreation access.
  3. No participant may use a program vessel unless he/she is wearing a Personal Floatation Device (Lifejacket).  Recreation staff can help with fitting a lifejacket appropriately to a participant if needed.
  4. Participants shall remain in the confines of the water recreation area when using vessels.  This area will be defined to you by staff before you go out on your vessel.
  5. Reservations for vessels take precedence over any walk ups that want to use equipment.  Equipment is checked out in time blocks.  Participants may use equipment if it is not reserved for a time block.
  6. The Water Recreation area may be increased or decreased at the discretion of the supervisor on duty.  All participants must follow the directions of staff in regards to allowable areas to use vessels.
  7. Any personal injury or damage to equipment shall be reported to staff at the dock immediately upon return.
  8. Waterfront Recreation programs or activities may be cancelled at any time the supervisor deems it appropriate as a response to weather conditions or unsafe water.
  9. Any reservations cancelled due to inclement weather are not transferable to future dates and/or times.  Participants will need to make new reservations for future times.
  10. UMB Recreation or Marine Operations is not responsible for the personal items of participants.  There is limited locker space for personal items on the dock.  Participants will be shown a safe location for changing and any personal items that should be left at shore.

Kayaks and Stand Up Paddleboards: 

  1. Participants will be fitted for a lifejacket and paddle.  
  2. A brief safety briefing will be given and instructions will be given on proper paddling techniques, getting in and out of a kayak or Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP), and getting into a capsized kayak.  Participants will be given instructions on getting on and off of a SUP and how to get back on if you fall off.  
  3. Staff will assist participants into kayaks and SUPs, launching, and retrieval upon return.

Weather Procedures:

  1. Changing weather conditions will be communicated to participants and vessels either while out or prior to going out.
  2. Participants are expected to pay attention and listen to staff regarding weather changes and how that could change a reservation or vessel on the water.  Participants not complying with staff giving directions regarding the weather may be suspended from future use or waterfront equipment.
  3. Participants may be notified before their arrival for a reservation that the waterfront is closing due to inclement weather. 

How to purchase a membership

The following instructions will guide you through purchasing a membership to UMB Recreation for access to the waterfront (or any of our Recreation facilities and programs).  Please note this will only be needed for non UMB-students, faculty/staff who are not currently UMB Recreation members, or non-UMB affiliates.

1. Go to and click sign in located in the upper right-hand corner. MUST HAVE UMB RECREATION ACCOUNT ALREADY if you don’t have one, please refer to the “How to Create an Account” section. 
Note: Management may need to assign an eligibility code to your account before you can purchase a membership. Please allow 24 hours for this to happen.  Contact UMBRec@umb.edu. 

2. From the Rec Portal page: Click the Member Services icon, then Membership Sales.

3. Choose a membership to see more information.  You will then see the effective date which should be the current date and the until date which is when the membership end.  
Note: You will get an automatic email letting you know before your membership ends. 
Once you decide which membership you would like to purchase click add to cart in the bottom right corner. If you would like to cancel and go back, click cancel in the bottom left corner.  Any discounts you are eligible for are automatically applied based on your account login.

4. Click checkout in the lower right corner.

5. Enter your payment information and click pay in the bottom right. If you click cancel you will not be charged and be redirected back to the Rec portal.  After you pay you will be redirected back to the Rec portal and receive a receipt sent to your email.

How to Reserve Waterfront Equipment

If you need assistance reserving your equipment for the waterfront, follow the instructions below.  If you have any further questions or issues with reserving equipment, you can reach out to matthew.lee@umb.edu.

  1. Navigate to the Waterfront Reservations page at the (you'll see the icon on the page with the boat- reservations for equipment open 4 days in advance).
  2. Choose and select the piece of equipment you wish to reserve (labeled on the page).  For vessels that can fit more than one person, just one person from the party is needed to reserve the equipment.
  3. Select the equipment you wish to reserve and then select the date and time from the options provided to you after selecting the equipment.  Reservations open 4 days in advance of the day of the activity.  Reservations are done in pre-designated time blocks.
  4. All equipment is free to reserve online- if any payment is needed for guests or non-members that can be completed at the waterfront.    
  5. First time visitors to the waterfront will be prompted to review and sign a liability waiver.  Please review, initial, and sign as part of the reservation process.  Waivers can be completed on site as well before going out onto the water for guests and those who don't reserve equipment.
  6. Complete any other prompts as necessary based on the status of your account.
  7. Checkout at the end of the process when your "shopping cart" (your reservation) is complete to confirm the reservation.  You will also receive an email confirmation to the email that is linked to your account.

Cancellation: if you need to cancel your reservation ahead of the time you reserved, you can do so through your profile on the Rec Connect portal.  Go to your profile in the top right of the page, click "program registrations", click the 3 dots on the far right, then cancel reservation.
