UMass Boston's Inauguration Ceremony
Chancellor Marcelo Suárez-Orozco was officially installed as the 9th Chancellor of the 天美传媒 in a distinguished Inauguration Ceremony on Friday, April 5, 2024. This ceremonial event was a pivotal component of a broader Inauguration Celebration, featuring a series of diverse events and opportunities to honor the accomplishments of the UMass Boston community.

About Chancellor Suárez-Orozco
Chancellor Marcelo Suárez-Orozco assumed the role of UMass Boston's Chancellor on August 1, 2020. Previously, Suárez-Orozco served as the inaugural UCLA Wasserman Dean, leading two academic departments, 16 nationally renowned research institutes, and two innovative demonstration schools at UCLA’s Graduate School of Education & Information Studies. His research focuses on cultural psychology and psychological anthropology with an emphasis on education, globalization, and migration. His award-winning books and edited volumes have been published by Harvard University Press, Stanford University Press, University of California Press, Cambridge University Press, New York University Press, and others.
About the New Quad
UMass Boston's new sustainable green quad is the culmination of 15 years of planning. The project was designed to address structural issues in the original campus construction by demolishing the Science Center and adjoining plaza—an area the size of three football fields. Demolition began just as the world was shutting down in the spring of 2020. In recent months, sloping green lawns, dozens of trees, and a network of ADA-compliant pathways have begun to appear. Also present are a new basketball court, a staircase and elevator to Healey Library, a new student lounge space in the Clark Athletic Center, and a brightly lit new parking lot.
